Rail Operator
Duties and Responsibilities
Rail Operations:
- Obtain and receive information and act on oral or written instructions by various communication devices
- Climb on/off equipment, set/release hand brakes, couple/uncouple air hoses, operate knuckle to couple/uncouple rail cars
- Participate in team meetings to communicate daily plans, fill out daily job safety analysis, understand and follow all operating procedures and safety policies.
- Judge and control speed as well as clearance distance of cars
- Operate track switches and other equipment to change train routing within yards or on road
- Check switch points for proper alignment
- Switch, spot cars and determine train make-up
- Observe and monitor track conditions (e.g., broken rails, defective switches, weather-related problems)
- Walk tracks to perform inspections and track checks
- Report any damages or maintenance issues with the rail equipment
- Assist other areas of the transload terminal as needed
- Any other duties as assigned by the Terminal Manager
- Operate transloading equipment such as air compressors, portable transfer pumps, portable conveyor systems, front end loaders, etc.
- Safely transload various materials, including hazardous and non-hazardous liquids, and dry bulk products
- Inspect cars for visual defects and safety concerns, calibrate equipment to ensure accurate product weight, volume capture, and prevent contamination; complete safety/maintenance inspections via computer-based data entry
- Conduct general maintenance and housekeeping duties, such as greasing, sweeping, moping, mowing and other duties assigned by management
Key Requirements
- Previous rail experience required
- Must have High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Commitment to and maintaining Twin Eagle’s safety culture, including safety training programs, following Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements and safe material handling
- Maintain professional interaction and collaboration with team members and third-party personnel.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, with proficiency in basic math and computer systems
- Experience in Microsoft office (Word, Excel, Outlook etc.)
- Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed
- Ability to work at various heights above the ground including on locomotives, railcars, and other equipment.
- Physical capability to perform unassisted tasks such as climbing, bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and prolonged sitting, standing, kneeling, and squatting throughout the course of a shift.
- Work, walk, and stand on uneven ballast surfaces for long periods of time.
- Ability to work in extreme weather such as rain, snow, wind, and extreme cold/hot temperatures.
